How do cheek fillers work and what is the process?
Loss of facial volume can be a natural ageing process or a result of an individual’s lifestyle and health. For example illness, smoking, weight loss, strong sunlight, and/or heat. However, volume loss can be restored and treated with specialized facial dermal fillers that are non-surgical and a non-invasive option for many people.
A cheek filler treatment uses dermal fillers to help plump the cheeks instantly. This is done by strategically injecting into the centre of the face to make the cheekbones fuller and more defined. The fillers used for the middle region of the face are made of hyaluronic acid and are safe and approved for use on the cheeks and facial area. Juvederm and Restylane are two very effective and well-known fillers for cheeks and under eyes.
Fill in both sides of your cheeks and massage well, and you will immediately see the fullness, contour, and structure of your cheekbones. One of the great advantages of this non-surgical procedure is that the patient stay awake, be involved in the whole treatment, and see and feel the changes unfolding. At ND Skin Aesthetics we want our patients to be as involved as they want during appointments and treatments.
This is to ensure that you get the expected results, not the unexpected ones. The treatment time takes less than 20 minutes and most patients experience little or no pain. Results are immediate and repeatable with no downtime, no major swelling, or bruising.
Assessment
Before the treatment is started, cheek structure and shape are evaluated to determine suitability for treatment. This is to determine if the treatment can provide the desired and expected results. Once everything has been checked and the patient is ready to proceed with the treatment an anaesthetic cream is applied to the area prior to minimising pain, and a high-quality dermal filler is injected once the cream has had the sufficient effect.
The injection is introduced slowly and gradually, on each side of the cheek, reaching all areas and filling the filler under the skin. Having only one entry point on each side reduces the risk of bruising, swelling and, vascular complications. To avoid large bruising and swelling, it is recommended not to drink alcoholic beverages for several days prior to the procedure.
Cheek Filler Recovery
Please note that after the cheek filler treatment, it will take 1-2 days for the filler to adhere to your face. Therefore, as with all non-surgical treatments, there are some post-treatment advice that must be followed to ensure a speedy recovery and avoid the risk of infection.
Avoid sleeping on the injected area
Avoid exercise or intense activities, this includes lifting heavy items for 24 to 48 hours
You can shower with warm water avoid hot water
Avoid pressure and any makeup on the area for at least 24 hours
Avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours
Apply cold ice or ice pack the area to avoid swelling
At ND Skin Aesthetics, we ensure that all patients are aware of the risks and complications associated with cheek filler treatment, the importance of following post-treatment advice, and a referral if serious complications occur.
Results
Cheek fillers are low risk and a non-invasive procedure with minimum recovery time. However, as with all facial dermal fillers, common side effects of cheek fillers may include swelling, bruising, or redness in the injected area. Increased risk of rare side effects and complications.
Dermal filler treatment is temporary and can last up to 18 months. In cheek filler treatment, the filler can keep its shape for 12-18 months, during which time the filler will eventually dissolve and be metabolised.
The best part about dermal filler treatments is that they are customizable and can be maintained by adding treatments once dissolved. It can also be used for experiments for people who want to have surgery but need an idea before making any permanent changes.
Cheek Filler Benefits
There is no doubt that the above cheek filler treatment has many benefits. In addition to improving the contours of the front and sides of the face, it can lift the centre of the face for a more youthful appearance. Other benefits include:
Minimal or no recovery time is required. You are able to continue with your normal routine, no need to take time off work after the treatment.
It is not a permanent filler, so as time passes results can be maintained or discontinued.
Another great advantage of using dermal fillers is that they are easily dissolved with hyaluronidase (an enzyme that occurs naturally in our bodies).
Cheek fillers have a very low risk of serious complications or infection.
Cheek fillers are customisable based on what you want to achieve and suitability, as more or less filler can be injected if needed to achieve the desired look.
Cheek filler treatments not only create structure and contour to your cheekbones, they can also accentuate the under-eye area and smile lines.
It is less expensive than surgical treatment and you can see results during treatment.
