What is Bruxism?

Bruxism treatment is the medical term for teeth grinding. This is a common condition that affects many people and can have many undesirable consequences.

Bruxism has several different triggers, many people will grind their teeth at some point in their lives. It’s a condition that can occur while you’re awake or asleep, and can be difficult to identify because it’s not always under your control. If you wake up with a headache, jaw pain, or other facial pain, you’re probably grinding your teeth. Also, teeth may be chipped. This is because this condition causes the teeth to collide and grind against each other, which can destroy tooth enamel and tooth structure. Not only is this uncomfortable and excruciating, it can also be an expensive procedure if seeking advice from a dentist perspective. Therefore it is important to identify this problem early on to prevent further damage.

We also know that bruxism treatment can occur as a response to stress. Some people have a habit of clenching their teeth when they are in a stressful situation or when their concentration is high. Again, it’s important to recognize if you have this habit because it can lead to unwanted side effects.

The Treatment

This treatment is given by injecting botulinum toxin type A into the muscles of mastication. The masseter muscles are located at the junction of the jaw and cheekbones on either side of the face. This is the muscle involved in actions such as chewing, opening and closing the mouth, and is known to be one of the strongest muscles in the human body.

Injecting wrinkle-removing injections into the masseter muscle temporarily weakens the masseter muscle, preventing unintentional clenching of the jaw or teeth. Only a small amount will be injected, so eating and talking may resume as normal post- treatment.
It is a safe and speedy treatment with less pain because of the use of an anaesthetic cream. Results will begin to appear during a weeks time. The recommended amount of waiting time before receiving another treatment is 3 months to maintain results and prevent bruxism.
All of our aesthetic treatments are provided by our doctor, who has eight years of experience in the beauty aesthetic industry.

After care tips
In addition to wrinkle injection treatments, there are some steps you can take at home to help relieve the symptoms of bruxism.
The first thing is to know yourself. If stress is causing you to grind your teeth, try writing it down each time. By being self-aware, you can fight this habit forever and avoid the negative side effects that come with it.
Secondly, if you experience night time bruxism, avoid stimulants such as caffeine hours before bedtime. This helps reduce the overactivity in the brain that causes bruxism.
Thirdly, make sure you schedule regular dental appointments. This can help identify problems that have arisen as a side effect of bruxism and help keep the damage at bay. Your dentist may also be able to put you on a sleeping mouthguard to protect your teeth.
