About Acne Scarring

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that’s hot or painful to touch. Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels, in acne, the glands begin to produce too much sebum. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and both substances form a plug in the follicle.

Your skin has tiny holes called pores that can become blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. When this occurs, you may develop a pimple, sometimes also called a zit or blemish. At Nd Skin Aesthetics we are able to offer you products and treatments which can help you with acne.

What are the causes?

Scarring develops as a complication of skin problems. Any sort of skin problem will cause scarring, however it’s more common with inflammatory skin problems. Scarring will usually appear as deep nodules and cysts. Skin breakouts usually happen due to deep tissue injuries. The body can then work to heal these wounds, which results in production of collagen. If deficient or an excessive amount of collagen is made, you’ll see scarring. Your risk of scarring is also increased if spots are picked, thus it’s important to avoid picking spots or touching the scarred area.

Types of acne scarring:

Ice pick scars – almost like holes in the surface of your skin which look like wounds.

Rolling scars – caused by deep tissue damage under your skin which gives the appearance of unevenness or rolling

Boxcar scars – these look like round crater- circles embedded into the skin.

What is the most effective treatment for acne scars?

There are a variety of skin treatments offered at ND Skins Aesthetics depending on the kind and severity of your scarring. You can book a skin consultation for your scarring with our skin specialist who can offer you advice and deliver you a treatment plan based on the severity of your skin condition.

Treatments such as courses of microneedling, Hydrafacial or medical grade peels, and products can be offered. Acne can only be treated with a plan over a period of time for results to be seen.

Will acne scars heal?
This is dependent on the severity of your scarring, if you have severe scarring the process of treatments may take longer to show results. In cases where the scarring is not so severe, results will appear quicker based on how efficiently you follow the treatment plan provided.

Once the acne is cleared you may find dark spots that appear usually reddish or purple in colour; this is common after the acne is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is far more easier to treat compared to deep scarring. This usually heals over time whereas scarring can be permanent if not treated at the right time.
