About Acne Scarring

Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point. It causes spots, oily skin and sometimes skin that’s hot or painful to touch. Acne is most commonly linked to the changes in hormone levels, in acne, the glands begin to produce too much sebum. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and both substances form a plug in the follicle.

Your skin has tiny holes called pores that can become blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. When this occurs, you may develop a pimple, sometimes also called a zit or blemish. At Nd Skin Aesthetics we are able to offer you products and treatments which can help you with acne.

What are the causes?

Scarring develops as a complication of skin problems. Any sort of skin problem will cause scarring, however it’s more common with inflammatory skin problems. Scarring will usually appear as deep nodules and cysts. Skin breakouts usually happen due to deep tissue injuries. The body can then work to heal these wounds, which results in production of collagen. If deficient or an excessive amount of collagen is made, you’ll see scarring. Your risk of scarring is also increased if spots are picked, thus it’s important to avoid picking spots or touching the scarred area.

Types of acne scarring:

Ice pick scars – almost like holes in the surface of your skin which look like wounds.

Rolling scars – caused by deep tissue damage under your skin which gives the appearance of unevenness or rolling

Boxcar scars – these look like round crater- circles embedded into the skin.

Once the acne is cleared you may find dark spots that appear usually reddish or purple in colour; this is common after the acne is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is far more easier to treat compared to deep scarring. This usually heals over time whereas scarring can be permanent if not treated at the right time.
