Shave Before Laser Hair Removal

Should You Shave Before Laser Hair Removal? Prep Guide

Quick answer

Yes. Shave the area to be treated about 24 hours before your laser hair removal appointment. Shaving removes the hair above the skin but leaves the root in place, which is what the laser needs to target. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate for 4 weeks before, because those remove the root.

If you have booked laser hair removal, you have probably wondered whether you are meant to turn up with hair or without it. At ND Skin Aesthetics in Wigston we get asked this every week, so here is a clear guide to getting your skin ready.

Why shaving before laser hair removal matters

Laser hair removal works by sending light down the hair shaft to heat the root under the skin. The pigment in the hair carries that energy down to where it needs to go.

  • Hair left on the surface absorbs heat above the skin. That can make the treatment less comfortable, can cause a singed smell, and means less energy reaches the root.
  • A freshly shaved area lets the energy go straight down the hair to the root, which is where it does its job.
  • The root must still be there. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating pull the hair out from the root, so there is nothing for the laser to target.

When to shave

Shave about 24 hours before your session. That gives any small nicks or razor irritation time to settle, while the hair is still short enough for treatment. If you forget, let us know when you arrive. We can usually tidy small areas, but it is best to come prepared.

How to shave before your session

  • Use a clean, sharp razor.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth to reduce irritation.
  • Use a simple shaving gel or foam and rinse it off well.
  • Do not apply moisturiser, deodorant, fake tan or perfume to the area on the day of treatment.
  • Make sure you have covered the whole area, including the back of the legs or the edges of the bikini line.

What to avoid before laser hair removal

  • Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating for 4 weeks before.
  • Hair removal creams in the week before, as they can irritate the skin.
  • Sunbathing, sunbeds and fake tan before treatment. Tanned skin needs different settings and may mean waiting.
  • New medication: tell us about anything new, as some medicines make skin more sensitive to light.

Can you shave between laser sessions?

Yes. Shaving is the best way to keep tidy between sessions, because it leaves the root alone. Avoid waxing, plucking and epilating for the whole course.

What happens on the day

Your first visit starts with a free consultation and patch test at least 48 hours before your first full treatment. On treatment day your therapist checks the area, cleans the skin, protects your eyes and works over the area with the Soprano Titanium applicator. Most people describe the sensation as warm, and the built-in cooling helps keep it comfortable. Everyone’s tolerance is different, so tell us if you are nervous.

Frequently asked questions

How long before laser hair removal should I shave?

About 24 hours before. That is close enough for the hair to be short, and long enough for any razor irritation to settle.

What happens if I don’t shave before laser?

Hair on the surface absorbs heat, which can make treatment less comfortable and less effective. Your therapist may need to shave the area or treat it at another visit.

Can I wax before laser hair removal?

No. Waxing removes the hair from the root, which is what the laser targets. Stop waxing, plucking, threading and epilating 4 weeks before your first session.

Can I use hair removal cream before laser?

It is best to avoid hair removal creams in the week before treatment, as they can irritate the skin. Shaving is the safest option.

How many laser sessions will I need?

Most people need around 6 to 8 sessions. Hair colour, thickness, skin type and the area treated all play a part, and we give you a realistic number at your consultation.
